Reading in Grad School
I was asked to speak at a graduate student professional development seminar in our department this week (Oct. 24), the topic of which is “Reading in Graduate School.” The other panel members and I will discuss our views for the most effective practices for reading as a graduate student. I have created a short document with my responses to each of the discussion questions for the seminar. I have embedded the document below in case someone might find it useful.

The tip about making a simple database is excellent, and I wish I knew that 5 years ago.
I’m going to share this with other.
Thanks Sean (and it was good seeing you in Cph!)

It was indeed good to see you in CPH. Wish we could have hung out more. Coordination without the regular use of cell phones was not idea, to say the least.
I’m glad you found the reading thingy useful. What I describe there is basically the strategy used by most of us who took the exam prep course with Kim Fortun at RPI. It’s basically the method she taught us with a few tweaks here and there. (I should probably add an acknowledgment to the document and re-post.) I did my database in FileMaker Pro. The only other thing I would suggest adding to the database would be a set of common keywords or tags that could be applied to each entry. I did that as well, but didn’t mention it in the document above. Also, I had a spot in mine for quotes. But not everyone would find that as useful as I did, so that’s optional. Anyway, glad you liked it.
